Universal IEMs only sound right when the nozzle seals your ear canal. Use this sizing guide to pick tips, test fit, and know when to go custom instead.

Quick Answer

Start with the ear tip size you already wear in other in-ears, then verify seal with a 30-second hum test before judging sound. If no stock tip size holds a seal through jaw movement, move up or down one size before assuming the IEM itself is wrong for you. Buyers who want a guaranteed fit without tip rolling should compare that effort against a custom shell.

Why Universal Fit Is a Tip Problem First

A universal IEM body is fixed, so the only variable you control is the interface between nozzle and ear canal. That interface is the ear tip. When the tip is too small, bass leaks out and you compensate with volume; when it is too large, the tip kinks in the canal and highs turn harsh. Neither problem means the IEM is badly tuned. It means the tip is the wrong size for that ear.

This is why two listeners can describe the same universal model in opposite terms. Fit is anatomy plus tip selection, not a fixed product trait. Treat sizing as a setup step you repeat per ear, because left and right canals are frequently different sizes.

How to Choose IEM Size in Four Checks

Run these checks in order and stop when one fails, because a failed check tells you which variable to change next.

First, insert with a gentle twist and hold for ten seconds. A correct tip stays put without you pressing it. Second, hum a low note and swallow. If the seal breaks or you hear a hollow change in tone, the tip is too small or too shallow. Third, pull the tip out and look at it. A tip that is folded, flattened, or creased was too large for that canal. Fourth, listen at a quiet volume. If you need to raise volume noticeably above your usual level, the seal is leaking.

Change one variable at a time. If you switch tip size and insertion depth together, you will not know which change fixed the fit.

  • Seal holds through hum and swallow: size is likely correct.
  • Seal breaks on jaw movement: try one size up or a deeper insertion.
  • Tip creases or feels sore after 20 minutes: try one size down.
  • Sound is thin at normal volume: suspect a leak before suspecting the tuning.

Where Custom Fit Changes the Decision

If you have tried multiple tip sizes and still cannot hold a seal on both sides, you are no longer choosing a size, you are choosing a format. A custom shell is built from your ear impressions, so the seal is not dependent on a tip that happens to match. That removes tip rolling from your routine entirely.

The trade-off is process. Custom fit requires impressions, a build window, and a final sale in most cases. Universal fit requires no impressions and arrives ready to use, but you accept that you may need to test several tips to get there. Neither is universally better; they solve different problems.

Fit Checks Before You Commit to a Format

Before ordering either format, confirm three things about your own use. Do you listen for long stretches where a slow seal failure would be annoying? Do you move your jaw a lot while listening, such as during travel or desk work? Have you already found a tip size that works in another pair of in-ears?

If you answered yes to the first two and no to the third, custom fit is the more predictable route. If you have a known working tip size and want the simplest path, stay universal and buy spare tips so a lost or worn tip does not end your listening session.

Decision Rules for Universal vs Custom Fit

  • You have a known working tip size: Stay universal. Buy that size and one size up as a backup, then recheck seal every few months as tips wear. Universal is the lower-effort path when sizing already works.
  • Seal fails on both ears after two tip sizes: Move to custom fit rather than buying more tips. Tip rolling has stopped being productive at that point. Two failed sizes is your signal to change format, not tip.
  • You need the IEM within a few weeks: Choose universal. Custom shells require impressions and a 6-8 week build window, so a tight deadline rules custom out. Timeline is a legitimate fit criterion, not a compromise.
  • Your left and right ears differ: Buy two separate tip sizes rather than forcing one size on both. Tips sold in pairs make this practical. Asymmetric sizing is normal and not a defect.

Product Facts That Affect Your Fit Decision

  • Sultan Custom Fit (Acrylic): Noble's award winning Sultan in a custom fit acrylic shell. Build time is 6-8 weeks after receiving your impressions. Additional charges may apply depending on desired design. This is the format to choose when tip sizing has failed you. The 6-8 week window and possible design charges are the real cost of removing tip dependence.
  • EAR TIPS (Classic): These are the ear tips supplied with Noble's classic line of IEMs, including the Encore, Katana, Django, Dulce Bass, Sage, Savanna, Savant, Savant II, Trident and the M3. Note that the ear tips are sold in pairs. Spare tips let you test sizes without guessing, and pairs mean you can replace one side if your ears are different sizes.
  • Build Your Own Prestige - Block 232: Build your own prestige block (colors will be more vibrant with lacquer). Once you order your Prestige we will attempt to build a Prestige using the block pictured. Please note that some blocks fail during the building process. If such failure occurs, we will notify you and you can either choose another block, or cancel your order. Please note that all sales are otherwise final. Typical build time is 6-8 weeks. Fit is only one variable. If you are choosing a Prestige build, understand that block failure can change your order and that sales are otherwise final.

Who Should Choose Which

Best for

  • Listeners who already know their tip size and want a ready-to-use universal IEM
  • Buyers who need the product quickly and cannot wait on impressions and a build window
  • Users willing to test two or three tip sizes to lock in a seal

Not for

  • Listeners whose seal fails across multiple tip sizes and who want a set-and-forget solution
  • Buyers who want the shell itself shaped to their ear rather than the tip
  • Anyone who cannot accommodate a 6-8 week build timeline for a custom order
